Have you seen egg prices lately? They’re enough to make anyone do a double-take. Eggs used to be a cheap breakfast option, but they now cost twice as much per dozen in many places. With Easter coming up, the timing couldn’t be worse. Families planning breakfast meals or egg hunts feel the pinch and wonder if eggs will ever be affordable again.
Why Are Eggs So Expensive Right Now?
Several things are happening at once to create this perfect storm:
Bird flu is hitting chicken farms hard across America, as the USDA Economic Research Service confirms. This illness is hurting farmers and affecting our breakfast options.
Chicken feed costs too much right now. The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service says corn and soybean prices stay high, making it more expensive to raise chickens.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that not having enough workers and transportation problems make moving food from farms to stores more costly.
Easter is coming when everyone wants…
