Leaf It to Nature: Boost Your Well-Being with Forest Washing
Forest washing, or “Shinrin Yoku,” is a practice that involves mindfully immersing in nature to experience its sights, sounds, and smells. This simple yet powerful activity can significantly enhance mental health by reducing stress, lowering cortisol levels, and improving overall mood. The natural environment acts as a calming balm for the mind, helping to reset and rejuvenate mental well-being. Whether it’s a walk through a forest or time spent in a garden, forest washing offers a natural way to boost mental clarity and emotional balance.
Annie glanced at the GPS map on the car dashboard. “The driveway is coming up on the right.”
LJ nodded as he slowed down to turn into the parking lot of the Japanese Friendship Garden.
“It’s so peaceful here. I’m looking forward to a nice, slow walk with you. After all the chaos and anxiety from the recent political season, this is exactly what we need.”
“I agree. It’s such a beautiful spot for self-care. You know, I recently read about forest washing, or “Shinrin Yoku,” which means “taking in the forest atmosphere.” It’s an incredible way to reduce stress and improve mental well-being.”

“I see why. It’s amazing how being in nature can make such a difference. The sound of the water flowing, the rustling leaves,” said LJ as he took a deep breath. “It’s all so soothing.”
“Exactly. Studies show spending time in nature can lower cortisol levels, reduce blood pressure, and even boost your immune system. It’s a simple yet powerful way to take care of our mental health.”
LJ smiled, “Speaking of which, have you noticed the different plants and trees here? They’re so diverse. I wonder if there’s a specific way to enhance the forest washing…
