An eco-village is a traditional or intentional community that aims to become more socially, culturally, economically, and environmentally sustainable.

What Eco-Villages Are (And Are Not)

They are Not:

Not Communes: Unlike communes, eco-village residents keep their own jobs, manage their own finances, and maintain private lives. There’s no shared income or collective ownership of everything. The Global Ecovillage Network specifically notes that eco villages are “not tied to specific sectarian organizations or belief systems,” unlike many communes.
