The holiday season is a magical time filled with joy, reflection, and the warmth of togetherness. It’s also the perfect moment to explore the transformative power of gratitude. In our fast-paced, 21st-century world, it’s too easy to get swept away by the constant buzz of daily life — stress, responsibilities, and the endless quest for more. Amidst this whirlwind, gratitude emerges as a quietly profound counterbalance, offering us a way to reframe our perspectives and enrich our lives. But what exactly is gratitude, and why is it so essential?

What is Gratitude?
The afternoon sun streamed through the glass doors, warming the floor of Annie and LJ’s great room. The sun flashing through the Christmas tree ornaments turned them into jewels hanging from the living pine tree. LJ had spent the evening before washing the tree off, cleaning the giant container it lived in, and rolling it into the house in time for its annual job—to be a Christmas tree.
Jazz played softly in the background as LJ thoughtfully walked around the tree, hanging ornaments in the right place. Annie glanced at him as she expertly tied a bow knot on a present using Japanese wrapping cloth. The recently baked bread mingled with the aroma of the pine tree, filling the air with a nostalgic and calming fragrance.
LJ paused from hanging ornaments and looked at Annie. “Hey, are you okay? You seem a bit off.”
“I’m fine, just thinking a lot. Can you help me with something?”
“Of course, anything,” LJ replied, sitting beside her.
“How would you define gratitude?” Annie asked, looking into his eyes.
LJ thought for a moment. “Gratitude is recognizing and appreciating the good things in our lives, no matter how small. It’s about acknowledging the kindness and support we receive from others and feeling thankful for it.”
Annie nodded. “That makes sense. The reason I asked is because I’ve been reflecting on my past, especially growing up in such a dysfunctional family. Remember how I used to talk about feeling so unsupported and lacking confidence?”
“Of course, I remember,” LJ said softly, taking her hand.
“It wasn’t until I got into high school that I began to feel a sense of support and encouragement from teachers and some family friends,” Annie continued. “They took an interest in me, believed in my potential, and helped me see my own worth. I’m starting to realize how…
